Authorized Signature Cards

Telephone calls or emails to request the dismissal of students or excuse their tardies or absences are not accepted by the school. For any documentation regarding tardies or absences, a note signed by an authorized parent/guardian is required. In order to ensure that the signature is authentic, all parents/guardians will have an Authorized Signature Card on file. The Card must be signed in person at the school or notarized. If a student's parent/guardian does not have a Card on file, Attendance office personnel will call the parent/guardian to verify the note in order to dismiss or excuse the student.  A parent/guardian may fax a note or take a picture of a note (which includes the parent signature) and email it to

Students who do not present notes with approved authorized signatures,present notes without signatures, or present notes with unauthorized signatures may face disciplinary action.

Procedure for Absences

Pre-approved Absence forms are available at the school.

For absences that are not pre-approved, parents/guardians will write,sign, and submit an excuse note to the Attendance Office within two (2)days of the absence. The note must contain the student's full name, the date of the absence, the reason for the absence, and the authorized signature. Cases in which notes are not received within two (2) days will be referred to an administrator. Excuses are not accepted by telephone or email.

Procedure for Tardy to School

Students who are late to school must present a note at the time they arrive. The note must contain the student's full name, the date of the tardy, the reason for the tardy, and the authorized signature. Excuses are not accepted by telephone or email.

If a parent/guardian is not available to provide a note that morning,the parent/guardian must email the Attendance Office prior to the student signing in. This is the only reason a parent/guardian may email the Attendance office. Please email the Attendance Office and include all of the information listed in the paragraph above.

Students reporting tardy without a proper note or advance phone call will receive an unexcused tardy.

Procedure for Early Dismissal

Students requesting an Early Dismissal must present a note to the Attendance Office before 7:20 AM on the day of the dismissal. Notes dropped off after 7:20 AM will not be processed at the student will no tbe authorized to leave school. The note must contain the student's full name, the date of the early dismissal, the reason for the early dismissal, the time of the early dismissal, a statement that the student will be picked up or drive himself or herself, and the authorized signature.

No early dismissal requests may be made by telephone or by email. You cannot sent early dismissal requests by email.

Adults picking up students should park in a visitor's space, check in at the security desk in the Foyer, then proceed to the Attendance Office to have the child called down. Bring a current, valid Photo ID. The adult picks up the child at the Attendance Office.

Please note that adults attempting to pick up a student during his/her lunch period may be required to wait until the student has reported back to class. Additionally, no early dismissals will be processed while exams (including class tests) or SOLs are being given.

Prearranged Absences

All absences for family trips must be prearranged through the student's administrator at least 5 days in advance of trip. Such factors as the impact of the absence on the student's academic progress and the educational value of the trip will be considered in determining whether a pre-arranged absence will be approved or disapproved.

Excused vs. Unexcused

Reasons considered Excused
  • Illness of the student;
  • medical appointments;
  • court (subpoena or summons must be presented to school);
  • religious observance;
  • death in the immediate family;
  • college visits (only applicable to seniors);
  • approved prearranged absences;
  • assistance with sick or injured family member.
Every effort should be made to schedule appointments after school hours.

Reasons considered Unexcused
  • Waking up late, broken alarm clock, oversleeping, etc;
  • car problems;
  • missing the bus;
  • finishing homework or project;
  • babysitting;
  • trips to the airport;
  • no utility service;
  • visiting a sick relative in the hospital;
  • family discussions;
  • unexplained family emergencies.
Corrections to Attendance

It is the student's responsibility to contact the teacher who entered the attendance in question during the next class period with that teacher.

The Attendance Office will only accept attendance corrections from the teacher of the period in question.
