National Honor Society

Thank you for your interest in the National Honor Society, or NHS. NHS members demonstrate the four qualities that serve as the standards: scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Using leadership experience and skills, students participate in community service activities that include both individual and chapter service projects during the year. All policies and procedures of the Battlefield Chapter of the National Honor Society are based on the provisions of the NHS National Constitution and the chapter bylaws.

Advisers:
Chapter Adviser: Michele Ramirez - [email protected]
Administrative Adviser: Chris McMillan, Assistant Principal - [email protected]

Membership Selection Process:

NHS Membership is a privilege bestowed by the school upon those students who are found to meet the criteria for selection. Membership is not considered a right inherent to any student. Candidates for NHS must have attended Battlefield High School the equivalent of one semester. Only Juniors and Seniors can participate as NHS Members. However, Sophomores can be inducted in the Spring if there is a Spring induction.

  1. All students with a 3.5 GPA meet the scholarship criteria to be an NHS member at Battlefield high school. Students with a 3.5 GPA or higher should decide if they want to join NHS.
  2. Students then need to demonstrate strengths in the remaining three criteria – leadership, service, and character. To be considered for selection to the chapter, students will complete a “candidate information form” outlining their achievements in the areas of service, leadership, and character. In addition, students will provide at least 3 recommendation forms to their teachers to complete called a “faculty input form” in which teachers will describe the students’ qualities of leadership, service, and character in the classroom and provide any comments as needed.
  3. The selection of candidates is made by the five Faculty Council members, not the Adviser, and the Faculty Council members identities are kept confidential. Each student’s candidate form is reviewed at least twice to ensure fairness and then a final vote is made by the entire Faculty Council for membership. Before candidates are notified of membership, results are reported to the Principal for verification. Missing any deadlines in the selection process will be a reason for nonselection. The ability to meet deadlines is a reflection of a student’s level of responsibility, an aspect of both character and leadership. Submitting forms on time ensures the Faculty Council has time to review all forms.
  4. Students attend the NHS Induction Ceremony in person. Students are not a member until inducted. There is no make up NHS ceremony. If the student misses the ceremony and is not inducted, they cannot be an NHS member. For Spring inductions, Sophomores would officially begin their membership in the Summer/Fall as Juniors and Juniors would officially begin their membership in the Summer/Fall as Seniors. For Fall inductions, Juniors and Seniors attend the induction ceremony and begin membership right away. Dues must be paid 30 days after induction to maintain membership.
