Summer Reading Programs

Prince William Country Schools Summer Reading Program:

The purpose of the PWCS Summer Reading Program is to encourage students to enjoy quality literature and to continue developing their independent reading skills.
Students:

  • Build their vocabulary
  • Develop their reading skills
  • Enjoy new stories
  • Learn new information

Student participation in the challenge is voluntary. Students who choose to participate will read books they self-select. Summer is a great time for students to read for pleasure and dive deep into their favorite genre or experience something new. Providing students with choice in what they read increases their reading motivation and engagement.

The High School Grades 9-12 Reading List (also presented in a slideshow below) provides suggestions for appropriate texts, many of which are available online. Other books selected by the student with guidance from a parent, guardian, or librarian, are also acceptable.

Prince William County Public Library Summer Reading Program:

Students may simultaneously participate in the Prince William County Public Library's Summer Reading Program while reading for the school summer reading program. The summer program runs from June 13th through August 14th. To participate, register online or through the Beanstack Tracker app on your smartphone. Track your progress digitally by checking off activities on the app. You can go in after 10 activities for a free book and to be entered into a grand prize drawing. After you complete 15 activities, you will get an additional entry toward the grand prize! Some hands-on activities return this year, but virtual programming will continue as well.
